Wild Capri frames the famous blue island as a living laboratory where “nature” is not the absence of design, but the dynamic interface between rugged topography, Mediterranean vegetation, and human care. By tracing these hidden systems through field observation, mapping, and design inquiry, the course invites participants to discover—and help reimagine—the island’s rural heritage as a contemporary architectural and landscape resource.
Program overview
Rural Futures’ Capri Summer School reframes Capri beyond its iconic vistas, focusing instead on the island’s lesser-known productive and managed landscapes: terraced agriculture, dry-stone walls, and agro-ecological mosaics shaped by long-term stewardship. Historical fieldwork will examine olive terraces and drystone wall systems that once extended across the island’s slopes, alongside current efforts to restore and reactivate these rural ecologies. Through guided visits to gardens, courtyards, and public green fragments within Capri and Anacapri, students will investigate how small, carefully maintained patches of vegetation sustain microclimate, identity, and everyday life in a dense, high-value settlement. The course combines site observation, mapping, and design inquiry, culminating in a critical set of proposals and a final review, consistent with established international summer-school and study-abroad studio formats.
