Faculty-led programs

Rural Futures develops its own courses and research initiatives, and we also partner with universities to design and deliver customized, faculty-led programs in Italy. These programs are co-created with faculty leaders and international offices to align with your learning outcomes, assessment needs, and pedagogical approach, while drawing on Rural Futures’ cultural and research framework: the study of how ecology, architecture, urbanism, landscape, and cultural heritage shape one another and, together, shape ways of living.

 

What we co-design

A Rural Futures faculty-led program can be configured as a short-term intensive, a summer school, a studio-based travel course, or a longer field-based seminar. Depending on your discipline and cohort (undergraduate, graduate, or faculty/research groups), a program may combine:

-seminars and site-based lectures with local scholars and practitioners

-design studios, mapping workshops, and field methods (landscape reading, surveying, archival and ethnographic inquiry)

-curated visits to architectural works, planning projects, infrastructures, cultural heritage sites, and productive landscapes

-meetings with public administrations, community organizations, and local enterprises

-optional Italian language and cultural modules aligned with your curriculum

 

Common thematic clusters include organic and ecological approaches to design; rural regeneration and re-inhabitation; design studio, landscape studio, restoration studio, cultural landscape management; adaptive reuse and heritage-led development; water, agriculture, and territorial metabolisms; and climate adaptation for historic settlements and fragile environments. Programs can also be structured around tangible outputs—such as an atlas, design proposals, policy briefs, or a public presentation/exhibition—supporting assessment and portfolio value.

Operational support

Faculty-led programs are most effective when academic leadership is not diluted by logistical responsibilities. Rural Futures aims to remove the “travel-agent burden” so faculty can focus on teaching, mentoring, and research. We can provide on-the-ground coordination for:

-program planning, scheduling, and partnerships with local institutions and experts

-classroom/studio needs and technical support (as required by the format)

-accommodation guidance and local transportation planning

-site access, permissions, and field trip organization

-pre-departure orientations and in-country briefings

-24/7 emergency protocols and local assistance

 

How collaboration works

Our process is consultative, transparent, and research-led. We begin by aligning on learning outcomes, preferred dates, cohort size, assessment requirements, and budget parameters. Rural Futures then proposes an academic and logistical framework—an itinerary, site portfolio, and teaching support plan—designed to achieve your objectives with clarity and realism. After review and refinement with your team, we can support recruitment materials and information sessions as needed, deliver pre-departure guidance, and coordinate on-site implementation alongside the faculty leader. We conclude with evaluation tools and documentation you may use for assessment, reporting, and future iterations.
